Matico Artisan Hand Woven Purple Runner/Rug/Tapestry
I had the privilege of being invited into Matico Lema's workshop and home while in Ecuador. As I sat and watched her work, I realized this is a mastery of fabric making that no machine, no other person could do. She knows and loves what she does.
Having been at her studio, I realized the importance of preserving the art she passes down through her family. Matico Lema is the daughter of artisan Kichwa parents. Founder of Huarmi maqui, a space dedicated to making fabrics on manual looms. These fabrics carry with them the history of Matico and the Kichwa peoples in the northern Andes of Ecuador.
