Is Travel to Cuba Safe?
Like anywhere, you always want to be aware of your surroundings. I have never had a bad experience or felt unsafe. In fact, Cuba is safe. In 2018 Cuba was names the safest country in the world for tourists by the 2018 Madrid International Travel Fair. Surprised? I was too, but found that Cuban people are very friendly, and places we may not venture here in the U.S. are perfectly safe to go in Cuba. We are legal Cuba travel for American citizens.
I can give dozens of examples, but here's just one. Cuba is full of restored areas, and places that don't look so great. Imagine you're in New York City and you look down a side street or alley and you see graffitti, very low light and some people chatting in a group. What looks like construction is going on, maybe some barricades etc. You get the point. Would you go down that alley? Most people would not.
Given that same situation in Havana, you'd be perfectly fine. Remember that firearms, drugs and violence are taken seriously and the punishments are severe. On top of that the people of Cuba just don't seem to be ok with criminal activity. Maybe it's not in their DNA? KNowing this to be true, the most crime in Cuba is petty theft. Always keep your passport safe, don't take a lot of cash with you, and be aware of your surroundings. The most likely place to be pick-pocketed in the world are near signs warning of pick-pocketers. The first thing you do after reading the sign is feel where your most valuable objects are, giving thiefs a head start!
